Getting Rid Of Nail Fungus

Getting rid of nail fungus can take a while because the longer the fungus has had to grow, the longer it takes to get rid of it. Expecting to be over it within a week with treatment would be unreasonable; unless you get the nail removed in extremely bad cases. Then the recovery after that includes the time it takes to grow back a brand new nail. It’s no fun; but yes it can be gotten rid of!

Some people are under the impression that nails somehow grow from the tip (the white part that we usually go by to measure the length). But actually, it grows from down where the cuticle area is and works its way up until eventually the tip shows that we’re used to seeing.

We’ll be focusing mostly on toe nail fungus because that’s the most common form of nail fungus and tends to grow in toenails more so than in fingernails The medical term for it is “onychomycosis” but the most frequently used term is “fungal toenails” which basically is a combination of both fungus and yeasts in the nail. Statistically, men get this nail disorder more than women do, and also the elderly.

Some factors that are main causes of toenail fungus are simply due to maturing, being a male, nail trauma, and perspiring feet from socks and footwear that hinder air flow and don’t soak up perspiration. It could also be from high contact to fungus which is usually accumulated through using public shower rooms in gyms, hot tubs, saunas and public swimming pools and strolling barefoot in damp, open public places. Other causes include having a minor skin or nail damage. Having diabetes, blood flow problems or a weakened immune system can play a role as well.

Many people have it but don’t realize that they do because it’s hard for them to see it considering nails are naturally thicker on toes. But when it’s extra thick, yellow or brown in color and brittle, you can almost assume that it is indeed nail fungus. At that point, you definitely want to discuss some kind of nail fungus treatment with your doctor. Here are some pictures of what it looks like at that stage:

Getting Rid of Nail Fungus

There are natural nail fungus home remedies to get rid of nail fungus such as tea tree oil and some people even use Listerine by soaking their nails directly in it for 30 minutes a day twice daily or they use a cotton swab or dropper to apply it on the infected nail. Sometimes they add vinegar to the mix, 50/50. The downside to this home remedy is that your feet might change to a green color from the prolonged usage; but over time your normal color returns. In addition, it can take months to fully heal the infected nail so you have to really be committed.

There are also oral antifungal treatments. The most popular of these medications are Sporonox and Lamisil. These medications can be costly and is to be used once a day for three months. The efficiency of these medications may vary from 60-80% and reappearance time is 15%. Lamisil shows to be more efficient and has lesser side effects in comparison to Sporonox.

But keep in mind that taking these medications has been proven to produce malevolent drug interactions such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, taste disorders and lightheadedness. In rarer cases when taking them, hepatitis and acute hepatic necrosis can occur. These topical solutions can only be purchased with prescription and can also be costly.

But other prescriptions that are proven to lessen the thickness of the infected nails are Keralac Nail Gel and Carmol 40. They also lessen the yellowing of the nail in several incidents. For more information about this, visit: nail fungus treatment which is for both male and females.
